UDR’s mediation training workshops are approved by the Utah State Court system and meet the 40 hour requirement required to qualify as a basic level mediator on the Utah Court Roster of Mediators, including the required mediation hours (Practicum) in our training workshop fees. Basic Mediation Training Seminar

  • Basic Mediation Training Seminar

      This training is designed for individuals who want to work in the growing field of mediation, participate in mediation as an advocate, or apply these dispute resolution skills to a current career field. This includes attorneys, arbitrators, human resource professionals, ombudspersons, directors, managers, planners, union representatives, and anyone who wants to learn conflict resolution skills for professional, personal, and community benefit.

      UDR's Basic Mediation Training is approved by the Utah Court system and satisfies the training requirement for mediators wanting to be included as a basic level mediator on the Utah Court Roster of Mediators. The Utah State Board of Continuing Legal Education has approved this workshop for 36 hours of CLE credits, which includes 2 hours of ethics and 1 hour of Professionalism and Civility. Our commitment is to teach not just a model for solving problems, but how to use this process to help people change how they handle conflict. This five-day workshop covers the following topics:

      • Negotiation Styles and Strategies
      • Sources of Conflict
      • Conflict Management Styles
      • Stages and Phases of the Mediation Process
      • Convening the Mediation
      • Communication Skills: Listening and Use of Questions
      • Writing Agreements
      • Managing Cultural Differences
      • Ethical Dilemmas in Mediation

  • Prerequisites

      This workshop is open to participants from all occupations and backgrounds. There are no prerequisites for this workshop.

  • Cost

      $1500 standard registration (full payment to confirm registration) which includes Practicum experience.
      50 CLE fee (This workshop qualifies for 36 hours of CLE, which includes 2 hours of ethics and 1 hour of Professionalism & Civility for attornies.)

Basic Mediation Practicum

  • Basic Mediation Practicum

      Participants from UDR’s Basic Mediation Training workshop are welcome to observe 10+ hours & 4+ of UDR mediations.

  • Prerequisites

      Prior to acceptance in UDR’s Basic Mediation Practicum, applicants must have completed a Utah court-qualified basic mediation training within the past three years.

  • Basic Mediation Practicum Components

      Trainees in UDR’s Basic Mediation Practicum will:

      • Complete 10+ hours & 4+ mediations observing a court-qualified mediator.
      • Gain mediation experience by co-mediating or solo-mediation 10+ hours & 4+ mediations.
      • Participate in debriefing sessions after observations and mediations.
  • Cost

      $500 Fee for trainees who completed basic mediation training from a provider other than UDR to be paid in two payments of $250 prior to beginning each phase in the practicum.

      There is no charge for graduates of a UDR Basic Mediation Training workshop.

  • Timing

      The time required to complete a Basic Mediation Practicum may vary. The practicum could take six months to one year depending on availability of cases and schedules of the trainee.
