Domestic Mediation

UDR's Domestic Mediation Training builds upon basic mediation practices and skills as presented in the Basic Mediation Training workshop. The Domestic training presents topics specific to mediating domestic issues, particularly divorce, custody, and paternity cases. The workshop provides training in dividing assets and debts, developing parenting plans, calculating child support, and addressing other on-going child-related expenses and tax considerations. This training is offered with two variations: 32 and 40 hours; each variation is described below.

This highly interactive workshop gives participants a foundation of knowledge for mediating in the domestic arena and provides opportunities to gain experience conducting mock mediations in a domestic context. A variety of presenters includes professional practitioners who work in the family arena including psychologists, mediators, and attorneys. This workshop covers the following topics:

• Domestic Violence Awareness
• Intake Procedures and Domestic Violence Screening

Prior to attending this training, participants must complete a 40-hour court-approved Basic Mediation Training and twenty hours of practicum as required to qualify as a basic level mediator on the Utah Court Roster.

The 32-hour version of UDR’s Domestic training is only open to attorneys who practice in the area of domestic law. Other participants are required to attend the 40-hour version, which includes a full day on the basics of Utah domestic law. Attorneys are welcome to register for and attend the additional day. Many lawyers have found it valuable to attend this extra day to review domestic law basics. Attorneys who want CLE credit for this workshop are asked to pay an additional $50 to cover costs and processing time. The 32-hour version of the workshop qualifies for 28 hours of CLE, which includes 2 hours of ethics.

This version of UDR’s Domestic workshop is required for all participants who are not lawyers practicing in the area of family law. The first day of training includes information about legal procedures and the fundamentals of Utah domestic law. Attorneys who want CLE credit for this workshop are asked to pay an additional $50 to cover costs and processing time. This workshop qualifies for 35 hours of CLE, which includes 2 hours of ethics.

UDR’s Domestic Mentorship Program exceeds the basic requirements for the mentorship component required to qualify for the Utah Court Roster of Domestic and Divorce Mediators. In addition to observing and conducting the required six mediations with a court-approved mentor, UDR mentees will gain additional experience, including opportunities to screen family cases for domestic violence, observe two or three other family mediators, complete relevant assignments, and participate in group and/or individual debriefing sessions. Prior to acceptance in UDR’s Domestic Mentorship Program, a UDR mentee must:

• Complete a Utah court-approved 32-hour (minimum) domestic mediation training workshop that includes at least six hours of domestic violence screening. (Note: The applicant must have completed the domestic training within the prior year, or if the training was completed longer than one year ago, the applicant must have been active as a mediator during the previous year.)
• Demonstrate a level of skill using a facilitative model of mediation. Acceptance to the UDR mentorship program may be contingent on the applicant's demonstration of skills.

*$1,500 if paid in full prior to beginning the mentorship
*$1,600 if paid by four installments of $400 each

Graduates of Other Domestic Training Seminars
*$1,700 if paid in full prior to beginning the mentorship
