  • What are the career prospects for mediators?

      As a profession, mediation is still relatively new. People interested in a career as mediator are cautioned to have realistic expectations. There are very few employment positions for mediators. Most practitioners who earn a living as mediators have spent years developing their skills, building their reputations, and establishing their businesses. Transitioning into a career as mediator will probably take time.

  • What are the Utah requirements to practice mediation?

      Currently, the State of Utah requires no license to practice mediation. The only standard in our state is established by the Utah State Courts. The Court maintains a Roster of Mediators who meet these standards. The Court has designated two levels of qualification.

  • Basic Mediator Qualification (covers all civil matters except divorce)

      • Complete a Utah Court-qualified 40-hour basic mediation training
      • Complete twenty (20) hours of practicum experience that include 10 hours observing a Utah Court-qualified mediator and 10 hours conducting co- or solo-mediation
      • Pass an exam covering mediator ethics
      • Pass a criminal background check
      • Submit an application to the Utah State Court ADR Director
  • Divorce Mediator Qualification

      • Meet all the requirements of a Basic level mediator above
      • Complete a Utah Court-qualified 32-hour domestic mediation training
      • Complete a mentorship program with a Utah Court-qualified Domestic Mediation Mentor
      • Submit an application to the Utah State Court ADR Director

  • Does UDR provide mediator training?

      UDR is the longest continuously running provider of Utah Court-qualified mediator training in the state. We offer the Basic Mediation Training seminar at least three times each year in January, May, and September. We offer the Domestic Mediation Training seminar at least once each year in November.   • Does UDR offer opportunities to complete some of the mediation experience hours required?

      UDR’s Basic Mediation Training includes the opportunity after training is completed to observe 8 hrs of online mediations.

  • Does UDR offer opportunities to complete the domestic mentorship required by the Court?

      UDR’s Domestic Mediation Mentorship exceeds the requirements established by the Court. UDR mentees conduct 20 hours of domestic violence follow-up screening interviews, observe two family mediations in addition to observing the mentor, and complete the required six mediations with an assigned mentor as required by the Court. UDR also asks mentees to complete additional assignments as part of the mentorship.

  • How can I continue to build my skills after becoming a Utah Court-qualified mediator?

      UDR welcomes Court-qualified mediators to join our panel of volunteers. Mediators with a basic-level qualification may conduct mediations through our Small Claims Court and Community programs. Newer mediators with a divorce qualification may participate in UDR’s Domestic Practicum program to gain more experience. Experienced mediators with a divorce qualification may apply to participate on UDR’s Panel of Domestic Mediators.
